When Will I Ever Learn?

Last night as I was drifting off to sleep, I had a great idea for a story. I was going to grab my iPhone and dictate the basic idea, but it was such an incredibly good idea that I knew I’d remember it in the morning. Satisfied with my decision, I drifted off to sleep.

You guessed it. Not only did I not remember the idea, but it also took me 2 cups of coffee and a full breakfast before I even remembered that I had had the idea at all! Even now, some two hours after I woke up, all I can remember of the idea was that it had something to do with dictating a story into Ulysses so I wouldn’t forget it, then importing the story into Medium to polish it for publishing.

Oh. I didn’t tell you, did I? I’ve tried so many writing apps since I ditched Ulysses, and now I’ve circled back around to the app. I still don’t have a Mac, but I’m using on both my iPad and my iPhone.

One good thing is I’ve learned how to export from Ulysses to Medium! It’s not as direct a method as the old Medium mobile editor, but it’s a start. I just tried it, and this was the result:

While it didn’t show up on my either my iPhone or iPad, it’s there in my desktop version, which I access via my web browser. The reason it doesn’t show on my iOS devices is because it’s in draft format, and since Medium did away with its mobile editor, you won’t see your drafts on your mobile devices.

For now, going to I’m stick with Ulysses. So far as I’m concerned, it’s not only one of the best writing apps available, but also the one that will let me export my writings to Medium with the least amount of hassle.

Finally, Ulysses will work with my Mac — if I ever get the funds to buy one. Anybody know anything about GoFundMe?

But getting back to the original issue, the next time I have an idea for a story, I won’t wait. I’ll grab my phone and write it down!

It’s the same as backing up your data regularly: it’s not a case of if you’ll lose your data; it’s a matter of when.
