Yes, the voices of critics are indeed quite loud. Raucous, even. But I always try to keep in mind the Hollywood director who, when asked about critics, replied with something along the lines of “Do you know what the qualifications are for being a critic? You have to have watched a lot of movies. To me, if that makes you an expert on anything, it’s popcorn.”
Critics are critics. Writers write. And looking at most criticism these days, it is very clear to me that critics too often equate criticism with being nasty and negative. I grew up in a time when criticism meant the art of evaluating or analyzing works of art or literature, not being a synonym for character assassination.
Critics on Medium? Most of them are wannabees. If they had any real writing talent, they’d be contributing their own stories, not shooting down others for simply having the courage to tell theirs.
